Mission

The Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) is a research institute under the jurisdiction of the Council of Labor Affairs (CLA), Executive Yuan. Its important missions include application of scientific technology, surveys and analyses of various risk factors in the working environment, as well as development of countermeasures. Compared with other industrially advanced countries, the rate of occupational injuries in our country is relatively higher. An in-depth analysis revealed that other countries had already conducted long-term studies on tracking hazards and that their technology for controlling these hazards are much more mature. To address problems in occupational safety and health, IOSH plans to introduce mature technologies and specifications through international interchange and cooperation. These technologies specifications will be transformed and applied to expedite the resolution of local problems in occupational safety and health, as well as to allow specifications of local technology to gradually conform to world stander system. In addition to the traditional hazards, we, together with other countries in the world, are now facing new challenges in occupational safety and health in line with the rapid industrial development: (1)potential dangers caused by higher speed, high energy and large scale equipments ; (2) unknown danger brought by new technologies and new substances ; (3)hazards arising from fragmented view of human, machinery, and environmental factors in the working environment, which increase the physiological load of workers. These problems involved different professional areas: biology, chemistry, engineering and medicine. IOSH shall set short, midium and long term objective. It will unite related academic organizations, associations and business unites and continue to undertake interdisciplinary research and develop control technologies.

The propagation of research results is an important mission for IOSH. All research results are provided to the Council of Labor Affairs, Executive Yuan to serve as references for the formulation of regulations and policies. In accordance with its characteristics, research results are also introduced to the industrial community through publications, information network, exhibitions and technology transfers to assist them in upgrading their occupational safety and health levels.
